“Lund is not just a university, it is an experience, and the best decision of my life!”

"You would be surprised how resourceful, resilient, and capable you become as you navigate the unknown and create your path."

Meet Rugare Tambo from Zimbabwe, studying Master's in Strategic Communication at Campus Helsingborg, and discover her experiences and best tips.

Why did you choose Lund University and your programme?

Lund is not just a university, it is an experience, and the best decision of my life! Ranked in the top 100 world-class research universities, choosing Lund University has allowed me to be an architect of the future. Aligned in our values, as a Swedish Institute Scholarship holder, here I feel privileged to be part of a rich cultural, philosophical and academic lineage that continues to create and innovate the future. Specific to the Strategic Communication Programme, I came from the traditions of Rhetoric and Cybernetics Systems with a focus on the interpersonal aspects of communication. So, deeply interested in the communicative and interpersonal aspects of communication, it is an honour to learn in person from world-renowned, current and cutting-edge researchers in the field of Organisational Communication, as well as have my mind opened to other keenly relevant topics in the field.

What do you think about studying at Campus Helsingborg?

As an International Student, I do my best work when I feel supported and safe. In this regard, I find the overall community and teachers in the Department of Strategic Communication attuned to our needs, accessible and accommodating. In a multicultural context such as ours, taking part in a multidisciplinary framework, I feel I can bring my best self as I am not only given a seat at the table but I am given a voice in creating a stimulating learning environment. Best of all, it has always been my dream to live close to the beach and the ocean and now it is a dream that has come true!

What is it like to be an international student at Lund University and on Campus Helsingborg?

In three words I would say it has been eye-opening, bewildering, and challenging. At the same time, you would be surprised how resourceful, resilient, and capable you become as you navigate the unknown and create your path. For example, I feel a sense of accomplishment at becoming a pro at Google Maps to where I can travel solo on public transport or read and comprehend some Swedish when I go grocery shopping. That said, some of the best experiences I have had included joining Helsingkrona Nation (a student nation), as well as participation and networking at the first-ever TedXHelsingborg event in Dunkers Kulturhus, thanks to an invitation from Helsingborg International Connections (HIC). In a nutshell, my days are full of inspiration and insight, from rigorous classes that develop my critical thinking skills to unique and must-do social events like Tura!

Do you have any advice for other students considering coming to Lund University and Campus Helsingborg?

If you are not afraid of soaring to great heights, Lund is the place for you. So come and enjoy a breath-taking view from the top of the world (literally and metaphorically).

Do you have any favourite spots in the city of Helsingborg?

Bruket Kaffebar rocks if you want a trendy brunch, or head a few metres down to Ebbas Fika for Fika with flare. Stroll down to the harbour and lounge on the sun chairs along the walkway to Fria Bad Beach (starting by Tivoli restaurant), then explore Helsingør Castle (on the Danish side of the Sound when you cross the Oresund during a Tura experience). Once back on Swedish soil, snap some iconic pics by Magnus the Emperor in front of Helsingborg City Hall, take in the view of and from the majestic Kärnan Castle, then consider rounding up a day well spent with some ice cream in Slottsparken.

What are your future plans?

In the medium term, I would love to do an internship with Vinnova - Sweden´s Innovation Agency. Then, in the long term, I look forward to pursuing my PhD and synergising with the Nordic Africa Institute.

Is there anything else you think prospective students should know about?

Equality and “Lagom” are the central tenants of life here in the Skåne region, so come as you are, drop your mask or fears and get ready for lots of fika - kanelbullar and strong coffee included - whilst making memories with new friends. Swedes are friendly and helpful and make the effort to make sure the vibe is comfortable. All you have to do is be brave enough to ask for what you need, and humble enough to learn from everyone around you. Just remember, in all of this, make your experience your own.
